인종차별과 혐오범죄에 저항하며 교회와 이웃들에게 보내는 매디슨 감리교회의 공개편지
An open letter to the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church:
Greetings from the Korean United Methodist Church in Madison, WI. It is truly unprecedented and a troubled time that we are currently living in. COVID-19 pandemic has impacted us, our loved ones, and our communities, both small and large. Last Sunday, we launched our first online worship service, allowing our congregation to join the service from home. We have been diligently practicing social distancing from our friends, at times our family members, and the members of our Madison community to keep each other safe. During this time of Lent, we also reflect on many things that we previously have taken for granted, particularly those that used to be much more accessible.
The pandemic has not only created physical disconnection amongst us as we practice social distancing, but it also has brought emotional disconnection, distrust, and fear in our community, which are largely based on nationality and racial affiliation. We hear incidents of xenophobic acts, biases and hate crimes that are targeted against Asian and Asian American communities across the nation. We hear stories of individuals who were spat on and who were verbally or physically assaulted in their own community settings. Sometimes for our members, the fear of discrimination exceeds the fear of contagion. In response to the increased incidents of bias, UW-Madison has recently sent out a message to reaffirm that “no one person, country, or ethnicity created this pandemic—disease does not discriminate”.
About a week ago, a friend of ours encountered a video on Youtube of an elderly Italian woman who was advising people to wash their hands and cover their cough. What she also said stayed with us for a long time. “The virus may go away, but discrimination perpetuates. There is no cure for discrimination.” There are only so many things that we can do right now, and we continue waking up to morbid news about new confirmed cases and constant fear. Nevertheless, we reflect on how the safer at home order and the social distancing remind us of how closely our lives are connected to one another's and how these policies were motivated by the love and consideration we have for one another, especially for our most vulnerable population. We pray that this period allows us to become more loving and compassionate Christians. We truly adore and put our faith in our God who shows no partiality. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). We pray that our good Father provides you peace, safety, and courage to stand up for one another as faithful followers during this difficult time.
메디슨 한인 연합감리교회에서 평화의 인사를 드립니다. 코로나 바이러스가 시작된 이후로 우리 주변의 많은 것들이 바뀌고 있음을 느낍니다. 우리 자신과 사랑하는 사람들 그리고 공동체 구석구석까지 그 영향이 미치지 않은 곳이 없습니다. 지난 주일, 우리 교회는 처음으로 온라인 화상 예배를 드렸습니다. 서로의 안전을 위해 이곳 매디슨에서 이웃들과, 그리고 때로는 가족들과도 사회적 거리를 성실하게 지키고 있습니다. 사순절의 기간 이런 일을 겪으며, 그동안 당연하게 여기며 누려왔던 삶이 얼마나 감사한 것인지를 깨닫습니다.
이번 바이러스의 대유행은 서로의 물리적, 사회적 단절 뿐 아니라 감정적인 단절도 불러 일으켰습니다. 국적이나 인종의 차이에 기반한 불신과 공포 같은 감정들 말입니다. 우리는 전국에 걸쳐 아시아인들을 대상으로 일어나는 차별 행위와 혐오범죄에 대한 소식들을 접합니다. 아시안들에게 침을 뱉거나 말과 행위로 그들을 폭행했다는 이야기도 듣습니다. 때론 바이러스의 전염만큼이나 차별의 두려움이 크게 느껴질 때도 있습니다. 이런 일들이 계속되면서 얼마전 위스콘신 대학교 매디슨 캠퍼스는 다음과 같은 메시지를 보냈습니다. ‘어떤 개인이나 국가 혹은 인종집단이 이번 대유행을 만들어 낸 것이 아닙니다. 질병은 차별하지 않습니다.’
일주일 전에 한 친구가 재미있는 유튜브 영상을 보고 소개해 줬습니다. 한 이탈리아 할머니가 손 잘 씻고 기침 가리고 하라고 말해주는 내용이었는데, 거기서 해 준 말이 오래도록 마음에 남습니다. ‘바이러스는 곧 사라질 거야 하지만 차별은 계속 남아 있어. 차별에는 약도 없단다.’ 조심하고 경계하고 거리를 두는 것 외에 우리가 할 수 있는 것이 많지 않은 듯 합니다. 그럼에도 우리는 이 격리조치와 사회적 거리두기가 일깨워 주는 진실들을 묵상합니다. 우리의 삶은 사실 얼마나 가깝게 서로에게 연결되어 있는지 말입니다. 더욱이, 이러한 정책들은 서로에 대한 사랑과 배려에서, 특별히 우리 가운데 가장 약한 사람들을 소중히 여기는 마음에서 시작되었음을 기억합니다. 이 기간 동안 우리 모두가 이웃을 더 사랑하고 긍휼히 여기는 그리스도인이 되기를 기도합니다. 우리는 진심으로 차별없이 사랑하시는 하나님을 믿으며 예배합니다. ‘유대 사람도 그리스 사람도 없으며 종도 자유인도 없으며 남자와 여자가 없습니다. 여러분 모두가 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나이기 때문입니다’ (갈 3:28) 참 좋으신 하나님 아버지께서 당신에게 평화와 안전을 허락하시길, 그리고 이 어려운 시기에 충성된 제자가 되어, 다른 사람을 위해 일어설 수 있는 용기를 주시길 기도합니다.
